GINGER – In Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine ginger is referred to as the “universal remedy”. It soothes an upset stomach and relieves nausea. It stimulates saliva helping with digestion and morning sickness. The active ingredients, gingerols, shogaols, gingerdiones, and zingerone are all antioxidants and the gingerols and shogoals are anti-inflammatories used arthritis and fibromyalgia. The gingerols may inhibit the growth of colorectal cancer cells.

Ginger is known for its ability to boost the immune system, it is an antimicrobial and antiviral agent with a positive effect on gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system, and can relieve pain and fever as well as aid in circulation. It can be used for a remedy for people with frequent cold hand and cold feet.

A word of caution, because it does have a blood-thinning effect those on blood thinning medications like Coumadin or even aspirin should be careful about consuming ginger. Also, because of its ability to increase bile acid secretion, those with gallstones or gall bladder disease should also be cautious about the use of ginger.
